Paterson was built as an industrial city powered by the Great Falls and was once the center of American silk production, but most of that manufacturing base is gone. Today healthcare and public education are the largest employers, sitting above a dense corridor of small retail, food service and trade businesses along Main Street, Market Street and Broadway.
